A Porky Inquiry

While eating a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs, accompanied by a fresh glass of milk, do you ever wonder what bacon flavored milk would taste like?

If the answer is yes, you are not alone. One bacon-fanatic took this pondering a step further, and wrote the Illinois Pork Producers’ Association a considerable letter questioning why this resource has not yet been taken advantage of.

In his letter, this gentleman asks some valid questions, such as; pigs lactate, so why don’t we milk them? And, with all of the other things produced by pigs (such as spam and pork-chops), why not add milk to the list?

An apparently very bored intern at the Illinois Pork Producers’ Association wrote back a thoroughly extensive letter concerning this pork oddity. Apparently, pigs to lactate but they are not milked for a number of reasons.

Firstly, pig milk is fattier than cow milk by about 5%. Also, they produce much less milk than cows, and are more difficult to milk due to their large number of teats (and average of 14 compared to a cows 4). Lastly, pigs cannot become pregnant while lactating, whereas cows can, so it doesn’t make economic sense to keep pigs lactating for long periods of time.

So now you know. If it ever comes up during breakfast conversation, you can wow your companies with your bacon knowledge.
